Want to silence your .22 but don't want to spend the $480 on a real suppressor? Then head over to Autozone and save big!

Disclaimer: Check your local state laws regarding usage of firearm suppressors. Use caution, just screwing any old junk onto your firearm and blasting away is not advised.

Sadly, the $200 stamp tax still applies. I'm half tempted to get one anyway.

Oh well, I have two more Form 1's first... SBSG'ing a 10ga SxS, and integrally suppressing a Ruger Mk II 22/45.

Why in the hell does anyone need a silencer?

You still need to legally register this as a suppressor, (which is something around 200 dollars, if I remember correctly). Otherwise, it's a legit suppressor IMO. I've seen this before, btw.

Seen it in zombie games, so I figured it'd had to be based in reality..... hopefully no one cares about the legality after the apocalypse though.

Why does anyone need a V12? I heard speed kills. Plus global warming. And the 1%.

Woah, now. I am not saying anything about guns. All I am trying to understand is, why would anyone need to use a silencer if they aren't doing illegal activities.

That isn't really the right question when it comes to America is it? No matter what it is someone has something because why not? There is no need for us to have .50 cal rifles but people do because they want to have them. Sometimes people want a silencer for aesthetics or to have a complete package. Maybe they like firing their guns on their property without causing as much attention. Some people use it for really nefarious reasons but at the end of they day these exist because people simply want them.

Yeah I guess, but that is kind of like making a sports car quieter. Whats the fun in that! The 007 thing I can understand. Although I have heard the silencers in real life don't sound anything like that.

Every time they say silencer my brain twitches. Not using the term "suppressor" is like nails on a chalkboard for me.

It's like that scene from The Internship when Vince Vaughn keeps saying "on the line" and the kid keeps correcting him.

Why would we need to restrict their usage of a suppressor if they aren't doing illegal activities?

Well to be fair, not many people can just carry around .50 cal rifles and rob a store. . . I can see the second part though. I hate when people cause a scene. I guess a suppressor does help there.

Their still pretty loud but it's more of a sharp crack than the normal BANG. You still need to muffle the sound of an un-suppressed weapon before it beats the shit out of your eardrums so either you do it with earplugs, a muffled headset, or suppressor. One bullet not a huge deal but if you're shooting lots of them your ears will not be happy.

Well I have been told by other people, that it is so you don't cause a commotion when firing your gun on your property(unless of course you are like my grandpa, and own a farm in India. . . then we shoot whenever we want to!). And I never said we should restrict the use, I am simply asking a question.

I have only shot a few guns, and I can attest to how loud they are. I didn't have ear protection, it was awesome! I think my ears aren't going to be in good shape by the time I am 50ish. I go to races with no ear protection and shoot guns(the few that I have) with no protection . . . good times.

It's a good question. But since we virtually never hear of criminals committing violent crimes with suppressors, it's a question that isn't usually asked.

It's a little unsettling to think of regular citizens with that kind of stealth and firepower, but with the kind of gun crimes that make national headlines, it's usually someone who was mentally ill and wouldn't bother to pay $200 for a tax stamp and and honestly expect to get away with their crime based on the slight reduction in noise achieved with a suppressor.

Anyone with access to a lathe and basic machining skills can knock together a suppressor pretty quickly. These adapter screws are even easier...

Legally though, in the US you still need a $200 tax stamp to register the adapter as a suppressor. Here in Australia, you'd be spending quite a bit of time on a state-funded holiday if you were caught with anything resembling this. Apparently in this country, bringing muzzle noise to safe levels mysteriously turns your firearm into a kitten and puppy murdering hate machine...

Legalities aside, even a coke bottle taped to the muzzle will really quiet down subsonic .22 rounds... "Yes officer, I was sighting in my rifle when I tripped and fell, and my muzzle just slipped into this bottle... I swear!"

If you're smashing a few hundred rounds downrange in a single session, you'll still damage your hearing even with earmuffs. Anything which takes away a bit of volume helps. If you're out hunting, sometimes you don't have time to slip your ears on, or you forget in the heat of the moment while lining up the perfect shot. Letting off a 30 cal without ears on hurts, and if it hurts, it's causing damage!

You can plink all day with .22 subsonics and not need earmuffs either, which is mad fun!

As for illegal activities, suppressed pistols and rifles aren't silent, even with subsonic rounds, they're about as loud as a lawnmower... Someone who is committing a crime with a firearm isn't really going to be concerned about the extra offence of having a suppressor though...

I've heard about the overly protective gun laws in Australia, that's rough. Over-the-top patriotism might be able to fix that. We have our 'Merica meme, sounds like you guys need a 'Stralia meme...

It's for when you need to pop some fools without letting everyone know what you're doing until the job's over and you've left. I mean, it's to protect your ears when you're shooting targets. Yeah... Targets.

My understanding is that a silenced rifle in a typical hunting caliber, like .308 or 30-30, is like a balloon popping. Still loud, but not ear-splitting loud.

What are they going to do, take your passport? You're already in Australia.

And I turned 21 in Australia, doin life with no...

But seriously, if you're wielding a muffled gun where a cop can see you you're probably up to no good anyway.

Our gun laws here are mostly pretty crap, and it's not helped by the fact that almost every political faction is anti-gun...

For the record we do have a meme:

Kinja'd!!!

@ MtrRider, for a big island prison in the middle of fucking nowhere, we do alright for ourselves! I'm in no way condoning illegal activity, but that's the best part about Australia, there's hundreds of thousands of acres of absolutely fuck-all, where you could drive for hours and not see a single person...

Dude, I was a crew member on a C -17 transport for six years after high school. I was young and invincible and didn't bother with earpro half the time I did walkarounds with the APU running full tilt. Suffice it to say I'm 30 now and my ears don't work as good as they used to. Use some earpro if you go shooting. I wear earplugs to rock concerts these days, you can't get that sensitivity back but you can stop it from getting worse. Extremely high decibels just bottom out your eardrums, it's like when a speaker goes into distortion. It sounds like shit and damages the equipment.

I haven't shot a gun in a few years now. I haven't shot many bullets either, it is mostly my grandpa's guns when I am in India. What I a most worried about is racing. I love going to races and I love listening to the cars going past, ear plugs seem like a bad idea just cause it muffles the sound of these beasts.
